Building a More Sustainable Future

At McSweeney Bros, sustainability is about continuous improvement. Through investment in renewable energy, efficient transport, water conservation, recycling systems, and lower-carbon production methods, we are creating a smarter and more sustainable way of working for the future.

Sustainability is built into the way we operate every day. From renewable energy and smarter transport systems to recycling initiatives and lower-carbon production, we are continuously improving how we work to reduce environmental impact, conserve resources, and build a more sustainable future.

Energy Management

We are actively transforming how energy is used across our business. Our head office and garage are powered by 100% solar energy, helping reduce dependence on traditional power sources. Energy-saving initiatives such as LED lighting, smart room sensors, and air-to-water heating systems improve efficiency across our facilities, while our move towards three-phase electricity will eliminate the need for diesel generators.

We are also investing in greener accommodation solutions for employees, ensuring sustainability extends beyond our operational sites.

Transport & Fleet Efficiency

Reducing transport emissions is a major part of our sustainability strategy. Our fleet now includes electric and hybrid vehicles, while all trucks, vans, and loaders operate using modern Euro 6 engines designed to lower emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

Additional measures including AdBlue technology, idle-engine controls, Eircode-based delivery planning, and pooled employee commuting help reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, transport waste, and overall carbon footprint. Real-time load monitoring systems also improve transport efficiency by minimising unnecessary journeys and optimising vehicle loads.

Water Conservation

Water conservation plays an important role in our day-to-day operations. We harvest and reuse rainwater across multiple applications including dust suppression, wheel washing, surface dressing operations, sprinklers, and concrete production.

We also reuse concrete recycling water for truck washing, helping reduce freshwater consumption and supporting more responsible water management throughout our facilities.

Recycling & Reuse

We are committed to keeping materials in use for as long as possible through a strong circular approach to production. Our concrete recycling facility and 100% RAP recycling operations allow valuable construction materials to be recovered, processed, and reused efficiently.

Road materials are recycled and reused in-situ wherever possible, while surplus concrete is repurposed into concrete products and Lego blocks rather than being discarded. By turning waste into reusable resources, we significantly reduce landfill waste and unnecessary raw material consumption.

Low-Carbon Production & Natural Resource Efficiency

We continue to reduce the environmental impact of our production processes through cleaner fuels, smarter systems, and more efficient use of natural resources. Our asphalt plant now operates using natural gas instead of diesel, significantly reducing emissions, while warm mix asphalt technology lowers production temperatures , reducing energy demand and gas consumption.

We also incorporate GGBS into concrete production to help lower embodied carbon. Covered aggregate storage areas reduce moisture and eliminate unnecessary drying processes, saving energy and operating hours. Automated plant feeding systems and streamlined material handling further minimise waste, reduce fuel use, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Digital & Paperless Systems

Digital technology is helping us reduce waste and improve efficiency across the business. Electronic dockets, digital laboratory reports, digitalized documents and dockets systems, and cloud-based shared-drive documentation have significantly reduced paper usage while improving communication, reporting, and operational control.

What our customers say

On behalf of the residents of Muckross Road we wish to thank you, your staff and contractors involved in Community Involvement Scheme at Muckross Road. The work was carried out in a very professional and timely manner. The residents were respectfully treated and all are well pleased with final result.

- Walter Browne, Kerry County Council.

I would like to take this opportunity to say how pleased we are with the completed job and to compliment you and your men who carried out the work, we found them to be most pleasant and efficient to deal with, I would certainly be recommending McSweeney's to my friends and family.

- Lynn & Kevin O' Leary

It was a pleasure doing business with ye and hopefully will du again in the future and Colm don't forget me if ye travelling to Kerry again.

- Ben Breen

I want compliment you and in particular the team of workers that were involved with the Tarbertto project on the curtsy and patience there showed to the people who were discommoded by the necessary work along the route. We thank you for a job well done and in a timely fashion and a special thanks to those men whose positive attitude and willingness to help where necessary was much appreciated.
